Woah, I guess I didn't realize this series was a duology when I read the first volume. This second volume is an abrupt departure from what the first volume was, and was actually pretty heart wrenching in places. The art felt like a step up from the first volume, particularly in the climax chapter of this story.
While I really appreciate not having to collect 50 volumes to keep up with the story and generally appreciate that the creator tried to self-contain a full story within these two volumes, I felt like the “ending” was a bit vague and confusing. Evidently this series is a light novel adaptation, but where's the light novel? I'm actually interested in reading the source material to see where this goes, if it has been translated, but I can't seem to locate it anywhere.
Still, this was unexpected and a delight to read. I love unexpected twists, and this delivered.
