Why are there so many 1001 Children's Books with dolls? I loved my dolls when I was a child, but I'm not a fan of reading about them. Sigh.
Nevertheless, this is a charming story of a charming child. Nesthakchen means youngest child, and this is the story of Annemarie, the youngest child is a family in Berlin. The story was first published in 1913. Annemarie is the pampered daughter of an affluent family, and she gets her greatest joy in playing with her dolls. The dolls live rich lives, interacting with each other, traveling places with their mother, Annemarie, though they are occasionally neglected as well.
Else Ury wrote ten books about Annemarie as she gets older; this book is the first. Ury was a German-Jewish novelist. She was taken to Auschwitz in 1943 and she was sent to the gas chamber on her first day there.
