Quoth the author blurb: “Lisa Henry likes to tell stories, mostly with hot guys and happily ever afters.” And to that I say: “I suppose ‘mostly' and ‘always' aren't synonyms, but it feels jarring to read that half a second after the ending of this thing.”
This is a story both oddly saccharine and extremely melancholy - a moment in time shared between two men in hopeless positions of war. I didn't much care for the amount of typos or the narrative voice during the smutty bits, but I liked the writing otherwise. Though I personally wanted something much different going into this, I don't feel right saying I'm disappointed. It's more that I'm not sure how to reconcile the way I feel about what I expected and what was delivered.
Either way, this isn't bad by any means. Not quite the story I wanted, but it's alright anyway. I didn't connect at all to either of the characters, but in the end that was a good thing for me because the ending was... certainly A Choice (TM). And not the kind of choice I'd have wanted to handle, if I did feel an emotional connection to the story or its characters.
I don't have much more to say, really. This one didn't leave enough of an impression - positive or negative - for me to have many thoughts to share.
(This book was chosen as part of my Read A Rainbow challenge. It's far better than the book I replaced with it, and I'm very grateful to Teal and Linda for their help choosing a replacement indigo-covered book when the first choice was a DNF.)
