This installment suffers from second book syndrome a bit. The first book is definitely more exciting and this one mostly sets up the rest of the series and works on solidifying Katy and Daemon's relationship.

The beginning half of the book dragged quite a bit and I almost gave up. Then it picked up and then it was a good book. Some of the stuff in the beginning was good background for the second half but that's what saved this book.

WHY? WHY DID THAT PERSON HAVE TO DIE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. Is this a spoiler? Probably is so I'll check that box just in case. Okay now I can rant as much as I want to.

3.5 stars. The book started out slow. I was initially put off by the on again, off again romance. The story picked up about 1/2 way in and ended strong. Will continue with the series.

I'm enjoying this series so much. I bloody love Daemon and I really like Katy (even though she's hella annoying sometimes, seriously annoying). The ending was just... aww. And can I just say that the humour in these books is hilarious, I laugh out loud all the time. Can't believe I didn't read the Lux series sooner!

Btw I so need to buy printed copies of these, but in the meanwhile, thank god for Amazon ebooks!

Most of this book felt repetitive with the same typical relationship angst over and over. Aside from that, I thought the beginning of the book was a bit slow, but thankfully the action really picks up toward the end. Some parts were also predictable, but I guess that's to be expected. The characters are starting to get a bit annoying and I kind of wanted to punch Katy in the face the whole time. However the story was enjoyable enough and I will be picking up with the next one because omg that cliffhanger!

HOLY MOTHER OF ALL ALIEN BABIES! Onyx is everything Obsidian needed to be.

Bar none, this is now neck and neck with the Covenant series and is officially in competition for my favorite Jennifer L. Armentrout series.

I completely stand by my Obsidian review and if you've read it... I did not likes at all.

Jennifer L. Armentrout completely redeemed herself in this latest installment in the Lux series. In fact, I think, (this is SO HARD for me to admit) that this is the best book she's written thus far (I'm sorry Alex, Aiden and even Seth). UGH! This is coming from a die-hard fan of the Covenant series! I don't give five stars often but I have to say Mrs. Armentrout has kicked it up about a thousand notches and has earned every single one of those stars.

Onyx picks up right where Obsidian has left off and it didn't miss or skip a beat. This book had it all. There was action, intrigue, great character development, great world building, angst, excitement, romance, ha ha moments and so much more. I read this in one sitting and didn't catch any sleep until the end. I just had to know and know until I couldn't know anything more because the next book, Opal, is not here!

Now let's talk about Katy and Daemon because these two have been THE TALK in the YA book world and honestly, I couldn't stand either one in the last book. In Obsidian, Katy allowed to get played by Daemon and kept getting played by him. Daemon was a total douche and I couldn't understand why in the world everyone was falling for him. He was over the top mean and demeaning. If that was the kind of guy girls fell for I was seriously questioning the kind of role models we have out there for our teens. It truly bothered me to no end. After reading Shadows, the prequel to Obsidian, I understood Daemon's behavior more in Obsidian and went into Onyx not liking Daemon a little less. In Onyx, I truly fell for them and totally enjoyed them even when they were being a bit annoying and unreasonable. Both characters showed growth in this book. Katy acknowledged that she allowed him to get away with treating her like crap and that she couldn't continue to let that happen and kept rejecting Daemon for almost the entire book. Daemon on the other hand did a total 180°. 180° because he still loves to give Katy a hard time but it was more playful and not at all mean. However, put 100% effort into apologizing and trying to prove his worth to Katy. Both characters opened up to one another allowing space for understanding. In the end you had two very likable characters, that I could respect, who were trying to survive the madness and who I felt compelled to root for and even protect.

Lastly, the most impressive part of this book was its flow. I didn't find myself struggling to believe that this could or could not happen or that the timing was off or that things were pieced awkwardly together. It all made sense and became totally believable. It was smooth and everything came together seamlessly and effortlessly. Everything that happened had to happen, every action and every word was meant to be. In the end I was left in awe, feeling fulfilled having just read a very unique and complete story.

Once again I find myself giving Jennifer L. Armentrout props for being a great story teller.

Então vamos lá. Ônix começa com uma cena que a autora nos acostumou a encontrar nessa história: Daemon cutucando as coisas de Katy com uma caneta durante a aula (e eu confesso que os diálogos nessas cenas são sempre uns dos meus preferidos). Pouco tempo se passou desde que deixamos esses personagens no livro anterior e as coisas não estão melhores do que estavam naquele momento. Ou talvez elas estejam melhores mas de uma forma que os personagens ainda não saibam.

De forma geral, gostei bastande dessa sequência. Jennifer Armentrout sabe como conduzir uma história de forma maravilhosa e não me decepcionou nisso ao explorar outras facetas dos personagens, acrescentar mais detalhes e expandir ainda mais esse universo já bem complexo. Não esperava nenhum dos acontecimentos que ela trouxe (na verdade, esperava mais cenas com Daemon e Kitty Kat, aliás, senti falta das cenas em que eles ficavam se irritando), e o rumo da trama foi em uma direção incrível e cheia de possibilidades.

Algumas coisas, no entanto, me deixaram inquieta. A primeira delas foi o personagem novo, Blake Saunders. Desde sua primeira aparição eu sabia (tinha certeza) de que ele iria causar problema – qualquer tipo de problema, eu estava esperando quase tudo, menos o que ele faz. Além de atrapalhar os progressos de Daemon para convencer Kat de que seu amor é sim de verdade, Blake escondeu muitas informações que teriam feito toda a diferença se nossa mocinha soubesse antes (e se ela não fosse tão teimosa também). E aí vamos ao meu próximo item da lista.

Katy. Não sei o que aconteceu com ela nesse volume, não sei. Sua personalidade ainda é a mesma, mas seu brilho não. Em vários momentos encontrei a personagem que tanto me conquistou em Obsidiana eclipsada por uma versão insegura quanto a si mesma e quanto a uma das poucas pessoas em quem ela pode realmente confiar. Entendo sua dúvida quanto a mudança repentina na atitude de Daemon, mas depois do que aconteceu no final do primeiro livro ela deveria saber que esse alien não mentiria numa questão como essa. É claro que isso não me fez gostar menos dela – até porque essa blogueira ainda é uma bookaholic enlouquecida como nós e faz ótimos comentários sobre as tramas dos livros que tenta ler. Mas durante toda a trama tive a impressão de que ela queria provar a si mesma e aos outros que era forte e acabou fazendo uma série de escolhas ruins – incluindo Blake e ao afastamento de Dee. O que me leva ao próximo item,

Por que, de toda as coisas que poderiam ter acontecido, as cenas com a Dee tinham que diminuir? [insira um emoji sofrendo aqui] E é isso, vou deixar essa pergunta aqui e seguir em frente.

“As palavras eram a mais poderosa das ferramentas. Simples e muitas vezes subestimadas. Elas podiam curar. Ou destruir.”

Mas um livro não é feito apenas de inquietações. Por isso temos Daemon. Todas as cenas desse personagem são muito preciosas. Sério. Mas sem momento fangirl agora: o desenvolvimento e amadurecimento dele é visível já nas prímeiras páginas da narrativa, ainda que seu humor continue (e ainda bem que continua com tudo o que pode), é possível perceber que ele verdadeiramente se preocupa com a Katy de um forma nova – o “me preocupo porque você é amiga da minha irmã” ficou para trás. Aliás, ele continua lendo o blog da Kat – “Vocês, bookaholics, adoram uma amostra, certo?” ❤ Daemon, migo, adoro uma amostra! – e está cada vez mais determinado.

Antes de acabar essa resenha, preciso falar sobre o Departamento de Defesa. Não posso contar muito senão poderia estragar o enredo, mas tudo o que vou te contar é: eu não imaginava. Tinha uma leve suspeita de que as pessoas do governo não estavam tão no escuro quanto os Luxen pensavam, mas Armentrout levou a minha suposição para outro nível. Eu queria contar muito mais sobre a trama de Ônix, mas como este é o segundo volume da saga Lux, vou me segurar um pouco mais e começar a escrever mais detalhes sobre a trama no próximo volume, porque, acredite em mim, as coisas estão prestes a mudar ainda mais e de formas irreversíveis.

Ainda gosto muito dessa saga e de seus personagens, a trama continua a envolver – mesmo com os poréns necessário – e cada reviravolta e descoberta te pega de surpresa de um jeito que tudo o que você conseguirá fazer é ler. E ler. E ler mais um pouco. Tenho um sentimento de que no próximo volume voltaremos a ter uma Katy mais do que incrível e de que todos os personagens novos que apareceram vão mostrar ainda mais de seus segredos. Afinal, temos mais do que Luxen lá fora – e, apesar de assustador, isso nunca foi tão empolgante quanto agora.
