2020 Update:
I totally forogt how this one ends and I'm glad I decided to reread the first 3 books before continuing on and finishing the series. This one has so many ups and downs.

I don't know why it took me so long to read this book. I've read the first two in the series in the beginning of the summer and really enjoyed them. But I finally got to this one and it did not disappoint. The majority of this book was the preparation for the showdown and the saving of Beth and Chris. Katy, Daemon, and the other Luxen were all preparing for breaking the others out.
First off let me just say how much I hate both Will and Blake. I know they are the antagonists and part of the DOD problem. But they are just horrible individuals who ruin everyone's happiness. And throughout this whole book, I wanted my gut feeling about Blake to be wrong. It bothered me that they had this sort of truce with him about breaking into the DOD facility.
Daemon and Katy are so perfect with each other. I absolutely love their interactions. I love that Katy is still a strong, independent character. She does not need Daemon to save her. While he is overly protective of her, he still respects her wishes and still lets her make her own decisions about helping them. I really appreciate how they respect and work with each other, it is refreshing to other novels.
Overall, I really enjoyed this 3rd book and with that ending, I really cannot wait to read Origin. I must know what happens to Katy and how everyone deals with the aftermath of this book.
The story was entertaining, but I swear to God, if I have to read “I bit my lip” one more time, I'm going to lose it. It felt like she was saying it once every page, geez!
4.5 stars because plot line has become somewhat depressing and daunting. They have no choice...if they don't do this, this person will suffer or die...so many things could go wrong...etc etc. I miss the wit, the hilarity, the comedy, the flipping offs. And then there's that ending...AND I DON'T HAVE THE NEXT BOOK. Those are basically the things that pissed me off or just didn't let me LOVE this book like the first one in the series, in a nutshell.
Just when I thought I couldn't hate Blake any more than I already did... What a fucking arsehole!
So this book ended very abruptly and painfully. Not cool, Armentrout, not cool! Throughout this book I really enjoyed the development of Katy & Daemon's relationship. I want my own Daemon! The middle part of the book with Carissa's death was completely unexpected and made me so upset. But then Dee sort of accepting Katy again made me really happy. It was a rollercoaster.
I'm so glad I already have the next two books on my shelf, because I can't wait to see what happens next!
The one just lacked something, I don't know what but it really didn't do it for me. I'm conflicted over whether or not I want to finish up the series. BUT THAT CLIFFHANGER. Even though I knew it was coming because I accidentally looked at the blurb for the fourth book, it still hit hard D:
As you all know I really didn't like Obsidian, book one of the Lux series. I couldn't understand for the life of me why everyone was falling for Daemon aka “Major Douche”. However, because I read all things JLA, I decided I'd go ahead and read Onyx. Onyx was BAD ASS! Yes, it really was and naturally, being that it was BAD ASS, I became a Lux fan. I jumped on in on that Lux party bus!
Needless to say, I was uber excited about reading OPAL... and then I wasn't.
There were a few things that stood out to me...
Opal felt like it was suffering from middle book syndrome. It lost its steam. It felt like the same ole, same ole. It felt like much of it was filler. It felt like an attempt to make the Lux series longer. Daemon and Katy get closer. Yeah, like really close. Although a sex scene was handled very tastefully, another scene bumped this little YA into the NEW ADULT category for me. This wasn't a huge problem with me only that I keep thinking that this particular series is always hotter than even the Adult books JLA writes. I don't know. At any rate, some stuff goes down that parents should know is happening if their kid is reading it and is younger than 17. IMO.
*Daemon and Katy continue to do things that either are out of character like in Daemon's case or things she's already said she will not do like keep things from Daemon like in Katy's case. The timing of the instances I'm thinking of were wonky and clearly were done to make the story go where it ended.
BUT...
The ending is cray cray. High five on the jaw dropping ending.
Overall, you'll still get the ha ha moments, crazy sexual tension, alien action you've come to love. There are two books due out after this one. I really hope that the next installment will be better.
3.5 Stars
These endless repetions, these super stupid characters..... got on my nerves.
I liked Katys development in the previous books but here she is indecisive and stupid 99% of the time. Daemon also enerves with his two modi: super arrogant (I would have killed him already) and super caring which aren't traits that work together. It feels like no character development happened on his side or even that he has no traits. Due to this, I needed a few breaks from the story because of the nervefullness.
