This is a finely plotted novel about a young woman whose many charms include being an animal empath. Her ability to understand how animals are feeling has led her to study veterinary medicine, but it also comes in handy when she breaks into houses to rob the pet owners! But she's only stealing in order to raise money to pay the legal bills of her father, a locksmith and burglar (taught her everything he knows), who has been arrested after getting careless. She's also always on the lookout for her mother, who was lousy at that role, and caring for her own aging animals and her chiropractor boyfriend.

The book alternates between the father and daughter's points of view, but the story is mostly La La's as she struggles with what to do about her father. Heart-warming isn't quite the right word to describe the book, but it is certainly engaging and compelling. Recommended for animal lovers and burglars.
