Although my name appears on the title page, the real author of this book is Miss Helen McGill (now Mrs. Roger Mifflin), who told me the story with her own inimitable vivacity. And on her behalf I want to send to you these few words of acknowledgment.

What a delight this book was to read! It's the story of a woman approaching middle-age who impulsively decides to buy a traveling bookstore on a cart, pulled by a horse. The book is a joy for anyone who loves books.

This book is a sweet, fun, and funny adventure through the countryside full of odes to good books. I had no idea what to expect when I started it, but I found the characters charming, and it moved along so quickly I was able to finish it in an evening.
