Probably found it more depressing as an adult than as a teen, but overall I liked it.
there’s a lot in here that feel unexpected but is also pretty realistic in what is meeting strangers and hitchhiking as a kid. the work didn’t all monsters but it’s not all good people either. and not everyone who’d like to lend out a hand can do so properly. i read this a while ago so not everything is fresh in my mind but i recommend if you like letter/journal style writing and honestly even if that’s not what you normally read (like myself) still try it out.
Good Ellen Hopkins readalike. This is hardcore and deals with a cornucopia of issues–drugs, sex, prostitution, cancer, transgender individuals, etc...–but the protagonist, Punkzilla, is kind of a sweet kid at his core and a cool narrator.
Not tween friendly, but an engaging and moving read for mature teens.
