The story of Rashomon had imagery that stuck in the mind, that of the old hag and the corpse, and the classic good vs evil. In A Grove was the story on which the movie was based though it took the title Rashomon. The prose is very spare, but we get a glimpse of old Japan, the class divides, gender biases, and of course, universal, very human frailties.
The first short story is brilliant, 5 stars. The others are less impressive, but all well-written.
