This book deals with four important surviving artefacts from Anglo-Saxon England: the eighth-century stone cross still standing at Ruthwell, in Scotland; the related cross-shaft at Bewcastle; the poem 'Dream of the Rood'; and the early 11th-century metal reliquary cross preserved in the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudule in Brussels, Belgium.
