In China, at a time when few girls are taught to read or write, Ruby dreams of going to the university with her brothers and male cousins.

Our day adventuring back to China started with Ruby's Wish. This is such an elegant story based on a true person, a granddaughter of a successful Chinese man who returned after the California good rush very wealthy. It has an interesting insight into a very different culture. There is a little girl that breaks the mold. She doesn't mind the embroidery or running a household tasks and skills, but she excels at calligraphy and wants to go to university. The story told is interesting and lovely on the page. While one could expect a different outcome in the book, it is fascinating to see it unfold in the way that it did.
I ordered a like new copy from a used online provider and received a beaten up, written on pitiful copy. I received a refund but I think we still would like to replace it with a better copy as it is a lovely book and sad to see it so worn.
We read this book as a recommendation from Beautiful Feet Books Around the World with Picture Books Volume 1.
Read again aloud through video on Tumble Book Library via Tipton County Library a la CV-19.
