Story
I always have trouble reviewing something so short. I only recently got into reading graphic novels with any regularity. This is one the reasons why.
The quality of this series is totally above most of the comics I remembering reading as a kid. The mix of sci-fi and fantasy and very real characters with some outright silly ones makes for some kind of recipe that I just really enjoy. Volume 3 is another great entry in the series, and I'm eagerly looking forward to Volume 4.
Artwork
Fiona Staples is a great artist. She adds so much to the story that my meager imagination wouldn't be able to approach. Her style greatly matches the story Mr. Vaughan is telling.
The epic continues and shows no sign of stopping! I will probably sound like a broken record with each consecutive volume, but I truly haven't read anything like this and I love it! The imagination, the characters, the weird worlds, the emotion, the blend of fantasy and sci-fi is in perfect form.
If Saga were published as one large tome instead of multiple volumes, I doubt I'd be nope-ing out at this point but here we are. Too much violence for my current mental state and volume 4 will not get a chance to impress.
Today is a good day for I have found another art form that I can geek out about. The artwork is damn fine. The plot is great too and
I. Can. Not. Put. These. Down.
The thing about Saga is that you'll find the laughs go alongside heartbreak and trauma. Nothing highlights this as much as Sophie's story because of all the characters I have met so far; her story is a gut punch to my heart. I'm so glad she has Lying Cat.
I also love the small illustration details you may not notice at first glance, like in one panel, a journalist's camera has an eye for a lens.
There are so many satisfying twists and turns. In some situations, I have no clue how the characters will get out of it. It has everything I love in a graphic novel.
I have been buying used issues of Saga but was thinking about buying the compendium brand new after reading Volume 2, so I thought about it for all of 10 minutes, and I did. I consider it money well spent.
I love this series completely.
Definitely my favourite so far! This story is so captivating and the artwork is gorgeous. This volume had tons of action and adventure, can't wait to read the next one!
I don't think I'll be continuing with this when the next one comes out, it just doesn't hold much appeal to me and I feel nothing for the characters.
Another good volume. The story continues to evolve and leave you wanting for more. There were a few laughs in this volume which I appreciated. On to the next one!
Holy crap! Shit got real, huh? This one is more action-packed than the previous volumes and ... that's all I'm gonna say, I need to go back to Earth for a few days before I get my hands on the next one.
Me like:
Nothing much round with the book but I guess the style which was so fetching in the first to volumes is now settled into a pattern and this particular story is not as heart warming as the previous ones have been. But its still an interesting tale to follow and so we shall
Definitely getting into this volume. Heist is so great. Klara is so great. Gwendolyn is so great. Lying Cat is the best.
I definitely agree with reviews that this feels like a “middle volume” that doesn't necessarily stand up on its own, but I'm invested enough in the story that I still loved it.
Also I think that Fiona Staples' work on Lying Cat's facial expressions deserves at least 1 star alone.
