Senator David Cummings is a revered senior statesman who has sent many blessings back to his home state. District Attorney Amy McGuire owes her career in large part to Cummings's patronage. But when a teenage girl is bru­tally murdered and suspicion falls upon Amy's irresponsible younger brother, Richie, the senator has his own reasons for seeing that Richie is convicted of the crime. Amy finds her loyalties torn, and her career in jeopardy, as she struggles to get to the bottom of the crime. She thought she knew all the people in her life, but now she can trust only her instincts.
