Except for some typical YA-ness, this book is pretty good. There is one chapter that is very, very powerful and scary (the amusement park). I love the idea that Dovey is mixed raced, has a great love for her lifelong best friend, and the setting is perfect. Dovey herself is just okay. There is too much male savior action going on and I am so over love triangles, it's not even funny. I would have liked to have known more about demons and how they work. One of the characters overuses the same insult word. The play just distracts from the overall plot.
That said, this is worth reading for some of the best chapters. They leave behind images that will stay with the reader for years. I especially loved the chapter with the grandmother. Ultra cool.
The surprise ending is worth one whole star alone.
I also just like the IDEA of this story. I do want more. I just want to see it break away from the same YA crap that is in every other paranormal romance. I want to see Dovey pick up a book and learn something about what she is fighting. I want to see a BIG BAD as big as Josephine have an epic evil plan (something way cooler than Kitty's).
