SHOOM
I don't read a lot of action thrillers. Most of them read as being really formulaic to me, and I can't seem to turn my brain off enough to just enjoy the ride. This one especially reads like Indiana Jones had a fling with (Inter)National Treasure, and brought their child up like Lara Croft. The team is a ragtag group, each hailing from a different small(? Under-represented? Not the US or EU?) country, each awesome at literally everything. No, seriously, everything. The hero, Jack West, manages to be especially awesome at literally everything. Time gets all wibblywobbly as our team of heroes manages to circle the globe in just a few days, but that's okay because everyone manages to be right where they should be at exactly the right moments.
I sort of enjoyed the ride, but not because it was action-packed thriller material. I moreso enjoyed it for the camp. The constant comic book noises (BAM! ZOOM! WOOSH! SHOOM!) were especially amusing, and Lily's “SWEAR JAR!” was kind of endearing, actually. But the rest? I dunno, I can't suspend my disbelief enough to accept a lot of what happened.
Can we all just agree that Horus is the real star of this?
