As a reader, I've read thousands of pages of dialogue, and never paid any particular attention to the techniques of engaging dialogue. When it came time to try my hand at writing, however, I discovered that it easier to read dialogue than write it. The mechanics of coordination action with dialogue is a lot harder than it looks.
