This novella is a prequel to [b:The Peshawar Lancers 179021 The Peshawar Lancers S.M. Stirling https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309201529l/179021.SY75.jpg 172953], featuring Eric King (Athelstane's father) as a young man, on an adventurous expedition among the backward remnants of humanity in a North America devastated by the Fall. It was published as part of [b:Worlds That Weren't 101620 Worlds That Weren't Harry Turtledove https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309210983l/101620.SY75.jpg 97975], with unrelated stories by three other authors, and isn't readily available as a separate item, as far as I can tell.If you liked [b:The Peshawar Lancers 179021 The Peshawar Lancers S.M. Stirling https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309201529l/179021.SY75.jpg 172953], this is not as good, but still worth reading, extending the scope of the novel into North America with plenty of local colour. The young Eric King seems much like the man his son would grow into, although at the time of this story he probably hasn't yet met his wife.If you haven't read [b:The Peshawar Lancers 179021 The Peshawar Lancers S.M. Stirling https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309201529l/179021.SY75.jpg 172953], you could probably read this story by itself without real problems, but I recommend reading the novel first, because (a) it explains the scenario in full, and (b) it's a better story.
