Had to give reading up this book. Sounded promising but it was the puerile humour that killed it for me.
This book explores a vast far-future spaceship and the human society living within it, from the perspective of a man recently revived from suspended animation who retains no memory of his former life. It is undeniably inventive, both in terms of the setting, and the portrayal of the naive hero (who, for much of the story, quite literally was born yesterday).
The good points - and there are many - are offset by a couple of problems. Firstly, there really isn't any plot as such, although the setting is interesting enough for that to be less of an issue than it would normally be. (And, in fairness, there are few bits of plot here and there, just nothing of any real consequence). A second, and perhaps more serious issue, is a sometimes uneven tone that verges on the silly in places. There isn't enough of this for me to mark the book down more than a single star, but it is an irritation.
