Story of the Niger

An interesting little book, written so summarise the explorations of the Niger River by various explorers. The book is un-dated, but the most recent expedition is 1885.
A good summary, but sadly lacking maps. There are a couple of Mungo parks maps, but because a lot of the village / town names have changed, or perhaps were not accurately recorded, it is really hard to track the routes.


A brief summary of Pre-Park's explorers.
Mungo Park's first Journey - 1795-97 - Senegal, Mali.
Mungo Park's second Journey - 1805-06 - Senegal, Mali, Niger, Nigeria.
Hugh Clapperton - 1823-25 - Nigeria to Lake Chad.
Richard & John Lander - Richard who accompanied Clapperton, returning in 1830 with his brother - Nigeria
Adolphe Burdo 1878 - Sierra Leone, Nigeria
Joseph Gallieni 1880-1882 - Senegal, Mali
Heinrich Barth 1850-1855 - Libya, Chad, Niger, Nigera, Mali
