The ancient highway is, naturally, a river. In this book, Curwood departs from his usual scenes of the great Northwest in favor of the great forests of Quebec. Logging is a large part of the novel, as can be expected in a story where progress meets river, forest, and enterprise. Clifton and Antoinette are the stars of the romance.
