The author took the various small references to Kirks life before TOS, like his saying he's from Iowa in ST4. They seemed consistent with the character and what we knew from the many TV episodes and movies.
I have been watching Star Trek since it was first on the air in the 60's and I much enjoyed this book.
I especially liked the stories of what happened after the events presented in the episodes.
Interesting approach to a character many people think they “know”. I enjoyed seeing a bit more of Jim's early years, and even the start of his career had some good nuggets. I don't consider myself a die-hard fan, but I have read a good many of the Star Trek books that are out there, and have watched the episodes and the movies multiple times. I did enjoy the “snippets” of well-known events from the character's POV, but after a while, it began to feel more like an overview than an autobiography. Which, given the circumstances (fictional character in a fictional universe), I suppose is to be expected, if one was being limited to more canon-esque topics. I also enjoyed reading about the over-arching themes present in the character's experiences, and how impactful they were; this tied everything together. A fun read, although sometimes a bit on the depressing side. Oh well, I guess that's “reality” for you, even in a fictional universe.
