Ember is the only light in a dark world. But when its lamps begin to flicker, two friends must race to escape the dark.
The city of Ember was built as a last refuge for the human race. Two hundred years later, the great lamps that light the city are beginning to dim. When Lina finds part of an ancient message, she’s sure it holds a secret that will save the city. Now, she and her friend Doon must race to figure out the clues to keep the lights on. If they succeed, they will have to convince everyone to follow them into danger. But if they fail? The lights will burn out and the darkness will close in forever.

Sliver of a story (mostly concept, really) about an isolated, underground city with a failing power source. It's enjoyable if you like YA sci-fi. It has the potential to make a better movie - coming out this year with Saoirse Ronan, who famously portrayed Briony Tallis in Atonement.
A cute story about the power of imagination and curiosity.
This story will delight elementary students on up. The challenges are unique to the world but are also timeless. There are so many opportunities for discussion - on the value of science, libraries, sharing, etc.
Notes: strong young female protagonist, hardship, poorly behaving civic leaders
Very enjoyable but it occurred to me that I must have seen a movie on this at some point. Still an enjoyable read.
