The Crooked Staircase A Jane Hawk Novel by Dean Koontz published by Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine this is book three of the Jane Hawk series. After having such a hard time with the last book, I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with this series at all because the second book didn't find it's stride until the end and this one started off much quicker. I will say that if you are looking to get the full picture of these novels I recommend that you read the series from the beginning.
The story reads like a car chase where Jane Hawk is Americas most wanted and in my eyes she is a hero to break down the people who killed her husband. I loved getting more of an insight on Jane and her son while needing more but I think that Dean Koontz leaves you on the edge of your seat making you want to read the next book. If you are looking for a slow build mystery that keeps you turning pages this is the book for you. Thank you to Netgalley and all parties involved for my arc I am looking forward to book for and seeing how this continues.
Jane Hawk is still fighting the bad guys and the bad gals, but book #3 was some what predictable, and seemed to be a set up for book #4. I will wait to read reviews before continuing onward with book #4 - disappointing given how strong the first two books are in this unusual fast paced, character driven series.
Where does one even start with a Dean Koontz novel... feel in love with his writing as a teenager in the 90's and he never fails to impress me with his writing, having read just about everything he has published. The depth of his stories is what stands out to me the most and in a genre that normally wouldn't interest me. That and his ability to create such wonderful characters. Not just lead characters, many books include such wonderful extras that we meet throughout, the people that truly make you see that there is still some good in people. Jane Hawk is not only as bad a$$ as they come but every book in this series leaves you at the edge of your seat - Can't wait to see she ends up next and am jumping right into The Forbidden Door!
