Doesn't really help develop the Darkling's character, just gives a glimpse to a moment in his childhood.
★★★½☆
《The Grisha lived as shadows did, passing over the surface of the world, touching nothing, forced to change their shapes and hide in corners, driven by fear as shadows were driven by the sun. No safe place. No haven.
There will be, he promised in the darkness, new words written upon his heart. I will make one.》
DAYUUUUUUM!
I loved this a bit more than the Tailor. It gave some context to the Darkling and the old world.
“your true name is tattooed on your chest, you don't just let anyone read it.” If you think about it, really think about it, you will realize that the Darkling gave Alina his heart when he told her his true name. If he only wanted to use her for her powers (as many people like to put it that way), then there was no need for him to inform her his true name. i loved this book so much!! words aren't enough and i think i will never get enough of it. i wish it was longer, i wish LB added a chapter from the Grisha trilogy itself, but i'll take what i got. 10/10
This is getting four stars because it was written well and we get a complete picture as to why the Darkling became who he is and why he created the monstrosities in the future. HOWEVER, I'm not nor have I ever digged the Darkling. There are major abusive behaviors that we should not romanticize and/or give reverence to.
With that said... it's baffling that his mother had the reaction she did in the future when you clearly see that he is exactly as she intended him to be and become. She is one of the primary reasons he is calculating and murderous. To be honest, I don't think he is capable of love.
This is a story about the Darkling's life as a young boy. A wonderful addition to the series, as it explains his background and the reason why he became who he is in the main books.
BUT IT'S PAINFULLY BITTER.
EVEN MORE SO IF YOU READ IT AFTER FINISHING THE SERIES.
WHY.
This was an enjoyable short story with insight into the Darkling as a child. How sad to be forced to live in such loneliness.
“There is no safe place for the Grisha. There is no haven. Not for us.” There will be, he promised in the darkness, new words written upon his heart. I will make one. This short story gives us an insight into the old Ravka, where the Grisha were unwelcome, through the eyes of a young darkling. It depicts what he had to go through as a child and the isolation and loneliness he feels due to his powers.
The darkling is an extremely well developed character and this small point of view from a young darkling helps us understand his motives better, builds his character and makes him more interesting.
the only complaint i have is that it's only 40 pages long :') i NEED more from the darkling's pov.
