Interesting but not mind blowing at all. Usually I really like Seth Godin's writings and advices, but I find this lacking some “meat” and a more in-depth proposal than just a pep talk. Still it gives a good advice on how and when to quit or persevere.
Short book, but I like the message. Stay focused to be outstanding in the area you wish to excel at.
Godin oversimplifies the idea of when and why to quit. He tries to preach economics but fails to acknowledge the nuances and logistics of applying this mindset to everyday life decisions.
Thankfully, this book is concise; there are a few good ideas, and a couple of baffling concepts that Godin tries to sell us. I, for one, am not buying it.
Learn When to Say Goodbye
More a pamphlet than a book, “The Dip” is a quick read that teaches key concepts to help know when to bear down and when to back out.
I loved it. I definitely wish I read this book about a year ago, but better now than never. This is a great book. This book is great for anyone that is stuck in business or in a relationship. Thinking about quitting something? Not thinking about quitting but should be? The Dip teaches you when to quit and when to stick with it. It's a quick read and well worth it.
Short Review: This is short and it is free from Audible.com. The basic point of this book is that there are always hard points where we could quit. In order to be great at something you have to get through the hard points when most people quit. But you also have to quit all the extra things that are not moving you on to the ultimate goal. It is worth the 95 minute listen. I have all kinds of questions about whether this is compatible with Christian understanding of vocation.
So on my blog I have a 1000 word discussion of a 90 minute audiobook. http://bookwi.se/the-dip-by-seth-godin/
This book is great to find the motivation necessary to overcome major obstacles and to help you decide when it's no longer necessary to go through those obstacles if your resources aren't sufficient or if the chances of success are too low. Quitting actually helps you.
A great main idea. The lack of page filler nonsense is also appreciated, although sometimes I felt some examples and explanation would have aided in the reader's understanding.
I understand that Godin wants to write short and sweet.
But this was a blog post that became a book.
Quick read (~30 minutes?), well worth its weight in inspiration. Go buy a copy, hell I'll buy you one. You won't regret it.
