This is a remarkably good story from a writer who isn't otherwise one of my favourites. The scenario, the writing, the characters, the interplay of the characters, and the somewhat unexpected twist at the end; all are good. I was pleased to find it available as an e-book; I've had two copies of it on paper for a long time.
The alternative world it describes is strangely convincing; I find myself believing in it and taking it seriously. In real life, I've never set foot in Pennsylvania; I wonder whether that makes it easier to believe in this alternative Pennsylvania.
It's a pity there's no more of it. But the story is complete in itself and I don't see a good way to extend it.
Unfortunately it's a rather sad story, because all of the characters are facing major problems, and a happy resolution seems unlikely. However, the author mercifully ends the story while there's still some hope left; and perhaps the horse will learn to sing.
