Elementary school teacher Jacqueline Jacks Morales's marriage was far from perfect, but even in its ups and downs it was predictable. Familiar. Or at least she thought it was, until two police officers showed up at her door with devastating news. Her husband of eight years, the one who should have been on a business trip to Kansas, had suffered a fatal car accident in Hawaii. And he wasn't alone.

Excellent book with twists and turns I didn't see coming!
Jacks and James have a good marriage with its ups and downs. Until one day her life is turned upside down by two police officers give her the news of his death. But that's not it. He died in an accident in a city he wasn't supposed to be alongside a woman he wasn't supposed to be with. Enter Nick, the dead woman Dylan's fiancé who is shocked by the truth as well. On his insistence, Jacks decides to retrace the dead couple's steps to figure out what went wrong in her life.
The story is told in multiple timelines and both Jacks and Dylan's POVs. I liked the way both the women characters are developed. I thought Jacks handled her grief with a lot of courage even though I am unsure of the way she did it. Dylan's struggle to choose between Nick and James is also written well. There are a couple of interesting twists that made me want to read till the end. The book overall was good, just not great. This is seemingly in contrast with the high reviews this book has but I guess my expectations have gone up these days and I am not satisfied easily.
The synopsis had me already feeling sad but intrigued by the situation. I was shocked with the bluntness of the writing, especially in the beginning. There was a concern in the back of my mind that I thought because of the beginning of the book that I had nothing to really look forward to. I was wrong. The more I read, the more excited I felt about the story, and I wanted and needed to know more! There were a few things I predicted in the beginning of the book that ended up being right, but the surprises outmatched my predictions. The plot twists are what kept me reading, and eventually, I knew that I didn't have a clue what was going to happen next. The writing style made it easy to read and had me hooked.
