I read this book bc I saw that The Housemaid is talked about so much on booktok! The storyline is very good- going the the story through Mille's POV. But part 2?!?! I did not see that coming. The book reminds be a lot about The Last Mrs. Parrish & Verity!! But I feel like The Housemaid is the perfect mixture between the two.
Reading this book was FUN. I don't want to say much to avoid spoiling anything, but I had a blast reading this book. Started it late and then woke up early to finish it! The chapters are short and really keep you thinking, “I'll just read one more” until you've accidentally finished the entire thing.
take what i say with a grain of salt because i am one of the very few outliers when it comes to opinions on this book but like...
did i read the same book as everyone else??? i would've actually enjoyed this if i could have stopped focusing on everything i disliked buuuuut!—i didn't like the writing style it was super repetitive, the main character millie is annoying & she acts stupid even though she isn't, & the plot was..meh, average, mediocre!
yet another FOMO/booktok read and YET AGAIN i am disappointed
ALTHOUGH i'm not gonna lie, i loved the epilogue/ending, but that was the only part of the entire book that i liked T.T
4,5/5⭐️
Popcorn-Psych Thriller Mix
This psychological thriller perfectly pairs with a bucket of popcorn. It's a captivating and binge-worthy read, even though some elements may not be entirely believable. The story follows Millie, an ex-con hired as a maid by Nina Winchester, a seemingly typical wealthy and demanding housewife who gradually reveals her craziness and slobbish tendencies.
Nina is married to Andy, a handsome and wealthy man who appears flawless in every way. Millie can't fathom what Andy sees in Nina, and as she falls for him herself, the situation takes a crazy turn.
The majority of the narrative is from Millie's viewpoint, but the second act offers insight into Nina and the reality of life in the Winchester household.
With unexpected twists, this engaging novel will appeal to fans of mystery and suspense, much like Lifetime movies. After reading it, I can proudly call myself a Freida Readah!
I read this for a book club, and I enjoyed it.
On the surface, I thought the way this was written was compulsively readable. It did some things I had never read before in a thriller, even though I have read that it is very similar to another. (I hadn't read it). Personally the change in perspective, even with the novel being first person, was a real surprise for me.
The plot itself is a little slow for me though, so when the climax finally came crashing in, it felt oddly short. The main character was also a bit unlikable, which comes to a head for me when the character does something I personally find despicable, then the novel has no one really likable in it at all.
Why does the new housemaid's bedroom have a lock on the outside of the door, not the inside? Read it and find out! Personally a 3/5*.
“Those were my books, and you didn't treat them very well, did you?” This is the best quote of the book, please enjoy it very out of context.
4.5 ⭐️ this took me like 4 hours to read & i couldn't put it down!!! i guessed one of the big twists but that didn't take away my enjoyment
It was written well and I moved through it so smoothly and fast that I didn't even realize I finished the book, but still, it was too predictable. Like I knew who the bad guy was and who killed who so....
Between a 4.5 and a 5 stars. This book is a crazy rollacoaster ride. Reading this book made me palpably stressed and anxious and set my teeth on edge in parts. But it was so propulsive and compelling! Much more than a simple maid comes to work for a new family storyline. I loved the darkness of this story. It was so juicy and I will be reading the sequel!
The fastest I've ever read a book which was decently sized. I think that says enough lmao. I still don't get why Cecelia was the way she was tho- the author gave one sentence to explain but it wasn't good enough imo :/
This was a satisfying read, something I haven't experienced in a while. I liked how unpredictable and creative it was. Although, at first, I thought the author was giving away a lot of obvious clues, they turned out to be something entirely different in the end, which was a pleasant surprise. Moreover, the book sets up an excellent premise for a series. The book was easy to read since it was written in the first person, and the story was straightforward without any complex language or excessive exposition. As a result, I finished it in record time, around three and a half hours or so.
It took me a minute to get into this properly, but once I got past the first few chapters I got sucked into the story and finished it the same day. Would absolutely recommend, and I'm starting the sequel ASAP
Not anything special or amazing, but for commercial fiction, it was pretty great. It gave me what I wanted, fulfilled all the obligatory beats for a book of it's kind:
1. air-headed protagonist who is dumb and air-headed to make the mystery stuff last longer
2. romance, affair, yadda-yadda drama
3. suspense with fast pacing
4. fairly likeable protagonist
5. unexpected yet justifiable plot twist
The plot twist was well done because it was completely unexpected despite its being set up in prior chapters right under the reader's nose. It wasn't like the twist revealed some secret of the human nature to me or anything, nor did it have any deeper meaning under “cool plot twist”, but it was satisfying and, well, gave me that pleasant jolt of surprise that every commercial fiction plot twist should. I consider this a great book because it's the kind of story I can recommend to anyone. I could recommend this to my boss, my mom, my friends, my coworker. I think a really good book appeals to everyone, and this book certainly appeals to a general audience. It's also original enough, and it lives up to the expectations it sets for itself. Because of this, I think it deserves 4.8 stars.
Nothing literary by any means, but good entertainment.
I'm actually surprised I've managed to avoid spoilers for this since it's so popular, but I only figured out the big twist just before it was revealed at the start of part 2.
This was a quick, east thriller and it was exactly what I wanted to read so was a hit for me.
DNF. The main character was so naive, it was annoying. She was supposedly desperate to keep the job, but she seemed to be more concerned with stealing the husband. And when that went a little too easy, she wasn't suspicious of that at all. The ‘plot twist' wasn't that surprising, so I wish Millie good luck for the rest of the story and I'll move on to a better book.
La verdad que me ha entretenido bastante, obviamente no es el mejor libro del mundo y muchos de los plot twists me los veía venir, pero es adictivo y entretenido.
I just reviewed The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
Millie is desperate, desperate for this job... To work as a maid in the beautiful home for the immaculate Nina..
Her situation has gotten dire and she needs this job more than Nina needs a maid.
Never in a million years does she think she will get hired then one day.... The call came. Nina offers her the position! The best news she has heard in years! She will do the best job and give Nina no reason to fire her. Millie comes with a dark past and all she wants is a new start but is the Winchesters home the place to get that? Has Millie made a mistake getting caught up in their lives or is the mistake theirs?
The goosebumps still haven't gone down! I got severe whiplash from the twistiest turns no book has ever had! You know that feeling you get in your stomach, when it gets all knotted and it feels like you are falling down.. I had that feeling through most of the book. Everytime I thought I had it figured out.... WRONG!!!
Millie.... Oh Millie. I felt all kinds of emotions with her. I felt sorry for her, I felt afraid for her, I felt disgusted with her... You never really know how to feel from one page to the next and it's so expertly done, I am still reeling.
Nina is the worst kind of boss. I would have quit after a day but Millie wasn't in a position to and I felt aghast for Millie but that soon turned into outrage! What kind of people are any of them! Don't even get me started on Andrew. He is the very reason I am so glad I am married haha.
No one in this book ends up being who you think they are and I adore that! I couldn't trust my own judgment towards the end.
The pace was outstanding. It held the pace where it needed to and accelerated just in the right spots. I have a severe book hangover right now and I don't see how any psychological thriller can top that!
If you love a top notch psychological thriller that will have you questioning your own sanity, then this 5 star read is for you.
