The Knave of Diamonds

This one is a story set in England in the early 1900s. With some strong threads of gothic romance, it's not a light romance by any means. It's heavy reading and it's long, and the guy I wanted to win the girl didn't get her in the end. But the characterization and the scenes are so deftly told and so vivid that I'm liking the book a great deal and am sure I will find it memorable in the future. In short: a difficult story, well told.
