Continues the story well and an enjoyable read but somehow get to the end without much emotional attachment to any of the characters.
The story is structured like this: various teams travel the Long Earth with different goals in mind.
Much of the conflict revolves around humanity and their ability to co-exist with trolls and other humanoids. The war in the title deals with the Datum government wanting to control humans on Long Earth worlds, since their departure damaged the economy.
Things don't rev up until the last 50 pages. I enjoy the light humor and writing style so much that I was willing to stick with it, but it can really try a reader's patience.
Like the first book, only seconder.
More about the main characters and some new ones.
New species, a terrible disaster (one that scares me in real life) and
more odd places amongst the Earths.
So, if you read the first one, you should read this one.
Right now I feel like Joshua did towards Lopsang at the beginning of the book except about Jansen.
These books seem to be very much about the world-building and I need more plot. I suspect that if I'd read this, rather than listened to it, I would have given up on it a while ago. Don't know if I'll bother with the next one
I had a harder time getting through this book than the first one, possibly due to a distinct lack of Lobsang. It takes him ages to show up, and the pacing until he gets there is pretty slow. I still find the concept of the book fascinating, and this one allows for more in depth exploration of the sapient races as well as the potential of areas like The Gap. If either of those peaked your interest, definitely continue on with this one. It also has an excellent sense of scale both within the universe and the universes, something that feels very timely.
I love the big themes it addresses, and that is enough for me to finish off the trilogy, although it will probably be a while before I'm ready to dive in again.
Not as good as the 1st book. I was a little disappointed with it, but it wasn't bad.
