First time reading a book from this author, and I enjoyed every minute of it. It's a light and cute story! I like the fact that it's taking place in a scientific and academia universe.
Sweet, and very cute. Maybe almost too syrupy for me but I enjoyed myself reading this one.
3.5/4. Nice and easy rom-com read that made me laugh. A little too predictable, but worth the read.
What if Kylo Ren, Rey, Rose Tico, Finn, and Poe Dameron were overworked scientists at Stanford
Devoured this almost in one sitting.
It's a slow burn romance that builds the anticipation between Olive and Adam perfectly.
Enjoyed the academia backdrop and the cast of secondary characters.
Such a cute romance!
This book was amazing - it's been a loooooong time since I sat down and read a book all night, basically in one sitting (finished under the covers by flashlight lol.
There are so many things I loved about it. Sure, I'm a sucker for fake dating tropes, for imperfect women protagonists, for women in STEM representation (heck yeah!), for moody grumpy person and sunshine person falling in love, and so many other bits that were included in this book - if you like any of those things less than I do, maybe this book won't seem as wonderful to you but you should still read it because it was so well executed.
It is a wonderfully fresh take on all the romance-genre things you've seen before. It's self-aware. The banter was so well written.
Ali Hazelwood, if you read this, thank you for this book, I absolutely loved every minute of it.
Cute and fun and interesting, although honestly the sex scene felt very out of place (not poorly written but not as in character as the rest of the book). But overall it was an adorable book with fun rom-com tropes.
Wow! I did not think that I would like this book—I mainly bought it because my friend is into Star Wars and because I wanted to be included—but I loved it. It definitely read like fanfiction, but that's what I was looking for and it was perfect.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
This book was everything I didn't know I needed! Wow! The two main characters are literally the best. Olive is so awkward and nerdy in the most adorable way. Adam is one of the moodiest male characters I've ever read, but I love it. Hello new book boyfriend! This book has a grumpy/sunshine love story and slow burn romance. As a woman who works in STEM, I appreciated this book so much. The science aspects made me smile. I laughed, I cried and I raged at assholey characters. The burn is slooowwww and the sexual tension is definitely there, but the pay off is worth it! Hello Spice! Extremely well written and perfect for the relationship the two characters share. Read this book! I've been on a fantasy binge, and this was the perfect palate cleanser!
I am in love with this book. Everything about this book is just... ughhh perfect!
I love how Olive is the ‘gelabah' type and when Adam was teasing her, she kept falling for it. She so cute!!! And Adam Carlsen. Do I need to say more?! Man was perfection! He complemented Olive very well. Their romance was just on whole different level and made me felt weird things. I love it I love it I love it!!! 100/5 ⭐️
This is the types of book that will constantly be on my mind. And from the snippet of her next book, Ali Hazelwood might be my new favourite author for romance. I am not kidding.
wow. uh. this book was.. something else. Adam was definitely my favorite character, he reminds me so much of myself. and Olive's character was nice. loved how she wasn't afraid to be herself, yet she always looked out for people, close to her or not. i laughed and smiled reading this, it was.. phenomenal. I had high expectations for it, and it definitely didn't disappoint.
Ahhhh...
I sighed with happiness and in content, once I was done with the book. It hits all the right spot, romance-wise. I love it to bits. It's so dreamy and stupid-grin-and-giggle inducing, it's the prefect rom-com material.
I love how Adam, the main male is portrayed to be an ass when he really is not. I like the fact that he is actually not very likeable in general and he's okay with it. Yes, of course, he's a cliche of all the cliches – good looking, intelligent (he has a PhD, after all), rich, and all that jazz, but he is so freaking adorable that I fell in love almost instantly.
I also love how the female main, Olive, is somewhat dorky and unsure of herself, but has all the guts in the world to approach Adam, the infamous Stanford's ass, to play her fake boyfriend. Olive is, I believe, just how most girls are. A little bit unsure, a little bit insecure and love pumpkin spice anything. She's impossible to dislike, even when she overthinks everything.
I particularly LOVE how these two interacts, their light banter and teasing, how easy they open up to each other, and how they believe in each other. This book is a straight up no fuss romance, purely daydream material with lovable characters (though one in particular is not). Love it.
This has been a fun read for 75% of the book. It was quirky and witty. Olive and Adam were a good match and their interaction enticed me to continue reading. But the other 25% is just purely ... repeated stupidity.
I'm not a hard to please reader, I really am not.
I enjoy the conversations between Olive and Adam. The words felt real and genuine. I don't mind the fact that the author was hellbent on saying that Adam was an ass while the only ass thing about him was that he did his job mercilessly.
I also don't mind Olive clumsy lies to her friend and her abrupt decision to kiss a random dude in the hallway. Who wouldn't do that for a friend?
What I do mind is that midway through the book the story advanced by Olive sprouting another lie, a horrible lie and making no attempts to fix it before doing a myriad of other things with Adam. At this point, I found her a bit hypocritical and harsh. If Adam criticising curtly on a student's work as a part of his job is trashy, asshole, Olive insisting that she wanted to have sex with him while he obviously was hurt by the fact she was into someone else not him will be waste processing, landing filling trash level.
Usually, miscommunication is at the core of all problems in modern day rom-com. And I think that is fine. I don't need some complex reason. But it needs to be executed nicely. The second miscommunication in this book was not it.
Overall, it was a simple, quick to consume book. It's rom-com. It's the bad guy - good girl story. It's the faking dating to the save the world story. I will be lying if I say I did not love the 75% that was good. But I just hate the other 25% so much that it's a 3-star for me.
I enjoyed this book a lot, although I wish characters in fake dating situations would get over this whole “this person that I am secretly in love with can't POSSIBLY like me back and they are only fake dating me for other reasons” thing because that gets annoying after a while. JUST ADMIT YOU WANT TO REAL DATE.
i wanted so badly to be a hater but unfortunately this book kind of fucks ngl. it's very by bottoms for bottoms (girl i get it he is BIG) but like. miss hazelwood popped off a little bit in her reylo fanfic and i cannot take that from her
Ohhh, the emotions! That was so good. That was awesome. Such a wholesome rom-com.
I'll read the next book whenever it comes out, because I'm already invested after that chapter in the end of the book.
OK this book is super cute! I was hooked from the beginning and I really loved all of the characters. Ali Hazelwood's writing really helped me connect to the characters and feel for them. There were multiple times where I was tearing up slightly or laughing out loud.
The Love Hypothesis follows Olive Smith. She is a Ph.D candidate that is working toward helping catch the early stages of cancer. The book starts out where she is talking to another candidate and wondering if she should continue to work toward getting a Ph.D and they talk it out and she is then convinced that she should continue working to solve for this. Olive came off to me as someone who nervous, awkward but has the capabilities to rule the science world. I loved that about her.
The first chapter starts out with Olive kissing someone. But not just anyone... Dr. Adam Carlsen. The meanest most brutal professor toward all of the students. She was trying to prove to her best friend, Anh, that she was over the guy she dated for a bit because Anh was showing that she was interested in him but wouldn't date him due to the girl code.
This puts Olive in a weird spot because Anh spreads the rumor that her and Dr. Carlsen are dating. This causes them do decide to fake date for a few months to get Anh to belive that she is over Jeremy but also so Dr. Carlsen can prove to the board that he deserves to have his funds released since he is not a flight risk for the program. Over time, Adam and Olive become closer and get to know each other. I could tell that Adam liked her due to how he was reacting to her or quickly responding to doing the silly things she wants to do. I really liked Adam and all of his snappy comebacks. Constantly calling her a "smart-ass". Be still my heart. I love playful banter. Also, love two nerds falling in love.
Overall, this book was super cute, a fast read and I really enjoyed the characters. I cannot wait to read another one of Ali Hazelwood's books. I cannot believe she is a debut author! She is something special. I definitely recommend my romance lovers to pick up this book!
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I picked this book up and physically couldn't put it down. I tried to, multiple times and just couldn't stop reading. Managed to multitask cooking and eating while reading.
I had a case of holiday blues when I started reading this and it was a welcome escape for a few hours into the story of Olive and Adam. I really loved the characters and how the entire romance between them developed.
Why wasn't it a 5⭐️ read? I think it just lacked some complexity and depth in the plot.
