For readers of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and A Man Called Ove, a life-affirming, deeply moving "coming-of-old" story, a celebration of how ordinary days are made extraordinary through friendship, family, and the power of forgiving yourself--at any age. Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. Woman meets dog... The world has changed around Missy Carmichael. At seventy-nine, she's estranged from her daughter, her son and only grandson live across the world in Australia, and her great love is gone. Missy spends her days with a sip of sherry, scrubbing the kitchen in her big empty house and reliving her past--though it's her mistakes, and secrets, that she allows to shine brightest. The last thing Missy expects is for two perfect strangers and one spirited dog to break through her prickly exterior and show Missy just how much love she still has to give. Filled with wry laughter and deep insights into the stories we tell ourselves, The Love Story of Missy Carmichael shows us it's never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. It's never too late to love.

A story about a widow approaching 80 whose kids are not nearby and who insulated herself all her life with family. Now she is aimless and depressed and drinks too much. I find her too meek but also passive aggressive at times. In spite of all that, I really enjoyed the book. She passes out in a local park and is helped by people who, little by little, begin to populate her life. And a dog as well. She became a foster mother to Bob and it was her outings in the park with him and contact with other dog owners and such that accounted for her renewed zest in life. Her lack of self-esteem shines throughout the book but as her circle of friends and love for Bob increased, she was finding her way.
Missy Carmichael is seventy-nine years old. Her husband has been gone for a long time, her son has moved to Australia, and she is estranged from her daughter. She is alone, and life has little meaning for her.
And then suddenly everything changes. Into her life come two strangers and a dog, and together these three begin to return Missy to life.
The loveliest sort of story, a story of the power of love and relationships in our lives.
I don't know what to say, I really didn't know what to expect when I decided to read this book. I have had books that I couldn't stop reading but reading a book all on the same day is a very rare thing for me. This book was a page-turner and it was funny and sad and gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling. Without spoiling it, I hope we all can be like Missy! Loved this book and highly recommend it. It was beautifully written and brought me to tears on various occasions!
