While many books have looked at Michelle Obama from a style perspective, none has fully explored what she means to our culture. The Meaning of Michelle does just that, while offering a parting gift to a landmark moment in American history. It is also a rollicking, lively conversation about race, class, marriage, creativity, womanhood and what it means to be American today.

Five stars because it's an intelligent read and because I miss this classy woman and her family so much. To quote one of the contributors, the chef Marcus Samuelsson, “Michelle Obama is fierce... in the smartest, most intelligent way.”
Read Harder 2018: essay anthology
Firstly, these are love letters to and about Michelle Obama, written mostly by black women. Some feature more analytical or academic topics, some include conversations and interactions the essayists had with her, many frame her ascent to the White House in relation to their own experiences as black women, and how Michelle changed the game. I enjoyed reading this collection.
