I just finished the audiobook, and loved it so much that I promptly went online and ordered a hardback copy too.
I am so conflicted about this book that it's hard for me to review.
On one hand, it's a beautiful book in both the writing and setting. I loved the timeframe of the late 18th century which is not one I've read about too much; the descriptions of the outfits and buildings were wonderfully vivid and really helped the reader become immersed in the beautiful setting.
However, on the other hand, the pacing was unbelievably slow and the plot meandering. It took so long for the plot to move onto the next section that I ended up being completely disconnected from the story and characters. I don't expect historical fiction to be action packed and super fast paced, but this was glacial!
I did enjoy the writing and imagery of the book but given how completely disconnected and disinterested I became I can't give it anything more than 3 stars I'm afraid. Such a disappointment as I've got major cover love for this book!
