One minute sixteen-year-old Ruby Morris is having her first proper snog with Caspar McCloud in a hot tub, and the next she's being bundled inside the house, dripping wet, cold and in her underwear. Not cool. As she and Caspar shiver in the kitchen, it starts to rain. They turn on the radio to hear panicked voices - 'It's in the rain ...it's in the rain ...' That was two weeks ago, and now Ruby is totally alone. People weren't prepared for the rain, got caught out in it, didn't realize that you couldn't drink water from the taps either. Even a drip of rain would infect your blood, and eat you from the inside out. Ruby knows she has to get to London to find her dad, but she just doesn't know where to start ...After rescuing all the neighbourhood dogs, Ruby sets off on a journey that will take her the length of the country - surviving in the only way she knows how.

Okay, so I've seen a lot of negative reviews of this book, and most of them complain about our main character, Ruby. But you know what, though? She has just turned FIFTEEN YEARS OLD (the goodreads synopsis is wrong, she mentions several times in the book that she's just turned 15). She's young, you can't expect her to go all MacGyver when the whole world is dying. I think she did incredibly well for her age and the author wrote her very realistically. I would probably be acting the same way at 15, worrying more about my friends than how to get water to last another day. It's just the way teenagers think. Okay, yeah, she might be a bit of a bitch sometimes and she's definitely got a high opinion on herself, but you don't have to love the main character to love the book. Her attitude does get better throughout the book, I promise.
The book did a good job at explaining why the water is deadly and it was so interesting reading about the different ways people reacted. The situation really brought out the inner core of their personality, whether that was kindness or cruelty, selflessness or violence. And this book is so sad, so so so sad.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a different dystopian and well-written.
