Another Randall Parrish book of adventure. This one was shorter than some, so I managed to read it in about four hours. Good thing, too...the action makes it very hard to put down. (Short by comparison...400 pages!)
Wyatt, a Confederate artillery sergeant, is detailed by Jackson and Lee on a dangerous and important scouting mission. He has essential knowledge of the lay of the land from his childhood in the area, and it is his duty to ascertain what Union troops are in the area. But, before he even gets to his destination, he is present in the same house while his father's old friend is brutally murdered. This sparks a chain of unlikely events which results in his being the sole protector for the man's daughter Noreen–the girl Tom Wyatt played with in childhood. But, with the murderer's irregulars and the Union army in hot pursuit, can Tom and Noreen even entertain hope to escape with their lives?
