For years after her mother’s passing, Briar Blackbyrne lived in the shadows.
Briar now lives her life completely invisible to the outside world and her father, who rules the kingdom of Daramveer through fear and punishment. The princess of this feared kingdom has a darkness within her that keeps her chained and afraid of losing control.
Being descendants of powerful Gods and Wiitches, Shadow and Lumor Wielders are gifted with magic. Or so some think. When Briar’s mother died, so did her magic, as she vowed to never use her curse again.
When Briar’s brother returns to the kingdom of Daramveer after being away for five years, things begin to change. Unexplained creatures from Briar’s past, ritualistic crystals, and a dark ancient magic begin to surface that should have long been forgotten. When the king announces an arranged marriage, Briar decides to fight for her future and her own hand by entering a number of deadly trials alongside the men fighting for her.
Winning the trials turns into a distant thought, as merely surviving becomes the true test.

What an extraordinary debut! *The Trials of Darkness* had me utterly hooked from the start. If sleep weren’t a necessity, I would have devoured it in one sitting! This story is full of adrenaline-fueled moments, complete with a captivating magical system that kept me turning pages late into the night.
Briar Blackbyrne’s story is both haunting and inspiring. Living under her father's tyrannical rule in the kingdom of Daramveer, she embodies a perfect blend of vulnerability and strength. The darkness that lingers within her, a result of her mother's passing, creates a powerful narrative thread that Breaux expertly unravels. As Briar navigates her oppressive world, her struggle with her lost magic adds layers of complexity that resonate deeply.
The trials are a highlight of the book! They are intense, action-packed, and filled with unexpected twists that had me on the edge of my seat. Each challenge not only tests Briar's physical abilities but also her resilience and determination. I loved how Breaux built the suspense around these trials, making each moment feel like a nail-biting cliffhanger.
One of the most touching aspects of this story is the friendship between Briar and Maines. The friendship is beautifully portrayed, showcasing unwavering loyalty and genuine care that feels like a warm hug amidst the chaos. And then we also see new relationships forming—oh, what a treat! I won't spoil anything, but the chemistry sparkles with intensity and adds a romantic intrigue that complements the main plot wonderfully.
*The Trials of Darkness* is a masterclass in building suspense, emotional depth, and character relationships. You’ll feel every joy, every fear, and every victory right alongside Briar. If you’re a fan of dark fantasy with rich world-building and unforgettable characters and creatures, this book is an absolute must-read! I can’t wait to see where Briar’s journey takes her next! 💖📖✨
