The Doctor's Wounded Heart Union Army physician Evan Mackay runs his ward of the Baltimore military hospital with tremendous skill but no warmth. He will do his duty by the Confederate soldiers in his care, but sympathy and tenderness left him after the death of his brother, a Federal soldier. So why can't he stop himself from warming to his beautiful, compassionate, unapologetically Southern nurse? Two years of war have shown Emily Davis that the men on both sides of the war need all the comfort and care they can get. And that includes a stubborn, prickly Scottish doctor. As Evan opens his heart to Emily, she can only hope he'll let her fill it with forgiveness...and love..

Ok here we go.
The Vanishing Act is a beautiful, simple novel written from the point of view of a young girl named Minou. Minou lives on a teeny tiny island that is home to only four others (including a dog called No Name). Minou's life changed forever the day that her mother disappeared. And while she doesn't believe her mother is dead, everyone else on the island does. Then the body of a dead boy washes up on shore and Minou's world is once again altered.
Mette Jakobsen manages to make every ordinary event in this story seem magical. The book gives off a warm and cozy feel and immersing yourself into it is easy, allowing you to get to know the characters and their home. Vivid imagery brings them and the island they live on to life.
As the tale of Minou's mother's disappearance is told, you being to understand a darker side to the story. One that is only hinted at due to Minou's lack of understanding due to her age.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick read that will make you smile.
