Garrett Rett Baker has taken one too many wrong turns in life that slams him into a dead-end. He finds himself forced to return to his small town life in middle Tennessee where he left behind broken relationships and bad memories. With plans to leave as soon as he saves some cash, Garrett finds himself living in his deceased grandmother's home. Bittersweet memories come rushing back to Garrett, and the ghosts of his past begin to haunt him. The one thing from his childhood he keeps trying to find-his long gone mutt, Brownie, seems to be what is leading him to places he doesn't want to go, and people he never wanted to see again.

Life is complicated and most often harsh. For Garrett Baker it's both, and then some. He can't remember a time he was truly happy. When circumstances make it so he has no choice but to return home, he reluctantly does so.
Arriving back at the small town where he grew up, he is met with coldness, hostility, suspicion and indifference. He expected no less, but why does it bother him now when it never used to?
When Garrett begins to see Brownie, the ghost of his long-dead puppy, he wonders if he has finally lost it. Soon enough though, he sees that Brownie is leading him towards something. Is it possible? Is there such a thing as redemption for one like him?
This is a perfect break between all the spooky and witchy reads. I haven't read this author before and I'm glad to have the chance to. This is a story a lot of people can relate to and connect with.
So often we can feel alone, left out, and hurt by others and then purposefully close ourselves off. It's refreshing to read a story that can bring these situations to light, while at the same time show the emotions and struggles that go with them in a meaningful way.
I really enjoyed the pacing, characters, writing and the ending. Everything flowed well together and wrapped up nicely. This is one author I will be reading again.
