Life in a great school, where she was successful and popular, offered the brightest of prospects to Chris Stannard, the clever only daughter of a distinguished novelist. Very suddenly she came up against decidedly difficult circumstances. Her father died; money, which had always come easily to Chris, stopped and life looked gloomy. But it didn't take her long to readjust her outlook. She did not like the change to the decidedly second-rate day school which was all her aunt could afford, but the traditions of Wrenford were strong enough to carry her through some startling adventures, and to enable her to make her influence felt in her new surroundings.
