A visiting Detective is thrown into a bizarre case of what, not who, is killing people.
Detective Matilda White, a narcotics cop, is asked to come to the big city from the country to help investigate a sudden surge in drug use and the sudden disappearance of the undercover narcotics cop investigating the case. She is joined by a County narcotics Detective Leon, and a local cop Jacqueline. Upon her arrival, she is immediately driven to one homicide case after another as bodies appear with no obvious murder suspect or even knowledge of what kind of weapon was used. There are no leads, no suspects, and only body parts, but that is about to change as people start to kill each other including the cops.
Craig Steele is a very graphic writer, so be prepared when reading Time's Up: She's Breaking the Ice. He is also very detailed, the description of a decomposing body can be over a page long. He also has a warped sense of humor, or more his characters do as they are very quirky. Matilda wears head-to-toe costumes to bed such as a mouse. Leon makes very disgusting and funny jokes about dead bodies. Jacqueline soon gets in on the quirkiness and comes up with her own funniness. I also could not quite tell if Matilda and Jacqueline were on their way to becoming a couple or whether Jacqueline had been a couple with the missing detective. There are a lot of overtones or maybe because I am gay, I am seeing more than there is or maybe not. The novel is a quick read and the mystery does not go quite the way usual mysteries go, but probably more like real life cases work. I hope there is a sequel, but only if I get to see the lady crew again.
