This is an intimate word-portrait of the late Elsie de Wolfe — Lady Mendl. Ludwig Bemelmans came to Lady Mendl's California house for cocktails one day, and stayed on as a member of the family. When he met her she weighed ninety pounds without her jewels, and she was ninety years old. From his memories of those fantastic days he has done a mischievous but loving biography.
On one of her silk sofa pillows was embroidered her favorite motto: "Never explain, never complain."
