"The Gingerbread Girl" follows the story of Em, who after suffering a devastating loss, starts running. Soon Em runs from her husband and her home all the way to the airport. Looking for solace, Em's running takes her to the Florida Gulf where she settles into the loneliest stretch of Vermillion Key. Once there Em keeps up her running until one day she makes the mistake of looking into the driveway of a man named Pickering. Pickering also enjoys the privacy of Vermillion Key, but the young women he brings there suffer the consequences. Will Em be next?

Anche in queste poche pagine che contengono un romanzo breve o forse meglio dire un racconto lungo, il Re riesce a tenerti incollato alle pagine con una storia che ti immette subito all'interno del libro e in poche pagine non solo racconta una vicenda da brivido, ma riesce a farti entrare per un momento nella testa dei vari personaggi.
E' un peccato che un autore come questo ogni tanto abbia degli scivoloni così clamorosi, in più bisogna aggiungere che molti pensano che questo scrittore abbia dato il massimo con i racconti, piuttosto che con i romanzi. A leggere questo non si può che dargli ragione.
C'è anche chi sostiene che il Re abbia dato il meglio di sè quando beveva a dsmisura e la sua mente partoriva scritti impareggiabili, io non sono d'accordo, certo con gli anni la sua produzione è calata in qualità parecchio, ma penso che sia fisologico.
Insomma sempre un gran autore, che sforna quasi sempre certezze.
