I wanted to like Vatta's War as much as I did The Serrano Legacy, but this one nearly lost me at some points. Maybe it's intended for a young adult audience? Considering the age of the main character, that may be the case. Still, I always enjoy Moon's writing style, and she creates great universes. Definitely worth a read.
The book's a little rough. Objects essential to the plot are remembered by the characters only a few moments before they're needed to serve the plot. The secondary characters such as the ship crew, aren't that distinguishable from each other, probably because we rarely hear the crew members talk to each other, just to Ky.
Despite all of that, I loved this.
After reading Nathan Lowell's Solar Clipper series and being disappointed by the direction it took, I was hoping this would be similar, but without going off the rails.
While it doesn't devolve into military sci-fi, Trading in Danger is less about the trading that I was hoping for and more about the action filled danger.
Not a horrible story, and I do like other books by the author, but I can't get over my disappointment to continue the series for now.
This review is going to be a demonstration of reviewer bias, I guess. When I reviewed sheepfarmers daughter, I wasn't particularly impressed because it[return]was typical fantasy, and that's not really my thing. However, this book is typical space opera, and that is my thing. I personally enjoyed it. Until reading[return]the review just below mine, I even thought the plot was a new one. Yes, I know, I know: I'm probably the only SF fan in the entire history of the universe[return]not to have read anything by Lois Mcmaster Bujold. Look, I've only been around for 18 years or so, and for the first 8 of those I wasn't really reading[return]all that much. I can't have read everything.
