US-raised Magnus Jonson is seconded to the Icelandic Police Force for his own protection after a run-in with a drugs gang in Boston. When a professor is found murdered Magnus is soon involved in a hunt for a lost Icelandic saga, which may have links to J.R.R. Tolkein.
