While the City Slept

This is the story of a horrible rape and murder in Seattle that, the author argues, might have been prevented if politicians hadn't made disastrous cuts in our mental health treatment capabilities. As a result, a disturbed young man who failed to get the treatment he needed took the life of one woman and changed forever the life of another. The book tells this compelling story in fluid, compassionate style, spending as much time trying to understand the victims as it does with the criminal.
