I just finished Why I'm here by Jill Frayne and here are my thoughts.
Gale isn't like other 15 year olds. The only thing that matters to her is her little sister, Buddie. The stress of living with her Father while Buddie is now at the mercy of their brutal mother, has Gale living through panic attacks and withdrawing from her Father and stepmother.
Helen, a counsellor asked to help Gale, understands the bond of sisterhood like no other but can see reach Gale before something terrible happens?
I've never read a book set in the Yukon before and thanks to Jill, this won't be my last. I would also like to take a moment to really give my appreciation to the author and the delicate but beautiful way they handled very sensitive topics.
Triggers... attempted suicide and emotional abuse of a child.
I knew right from the first page that this book was going to be a hard one to put down. The way Jill Frayne weaved the characters into my reality was so artfully done I felt like they were all real people I could reach out and physically touch.
Gale really got to me and the love that was portrayed on the pages between the two sisters really solidified the caliber of the writing. It was raw, real and so full of deep intensity that you cannot help fully submerging yourself into their world.
I don't normally like more than one POV but more than one perspective here actually helped strengthen the narrative and really balance the story out.
I would probably settle this one into the literary fiction genre personally. Truly an exceptional read. The book is out now so go grab a copy. The book is well paced and beautifully written. It is definitely a book you need on your shelf.
4.5 stars. Such a privilege to read!
Thank you to @newest.press and Jill Frayne for my copy of the book.
