This book by Juliette Huxley (wife of Julian Huxley), describes their travels around southern and eastern Africa in 1960 while Julian carried out a survey of national parks and wildlife conservations for UNESCO. They compare the current situation to previous visit in 1929.While Julian Huxley explains the purpose in a foreword and a postscript, the main body of the book simply describes the travel, the people, and of course the wonderful wildlife they got to witness on their trips. They covered so many parks and conservations they all begin to blur, but the see, and Juliette describes a lot of fantastic scenes. The writing is precise and interesting, there are interesting anecdotes and background information on the people they meet, the culture and the animals themselves. It is easy reading, and I guess there is some repetition as the book goes on, but the writing is clever enough not to repeat itself too precisely.Worth noting that one of the scientists they visit is [a:Joy Adamson 132350 Joy Adamson https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1308378097p2/132350.jpg], and they indeed get to see Elsa the famous lion up close. The book does a good job in conveying the author (and her husband's) obvious love of the African animals and a real passion for their long term protection.3 stars.
