Laurel is een lief en rustig meisje met een eigenaardige eetgewoonte. Tot op heden kreeg ze altijd thuis les van haar moeder, maar nu ze oud genoeg is om naar de middelbare school te gaan, willen haar ouders ook dat ze dit doet. Ze verhuizen naar de stad en laten het landgoed achter waar ze vroeger woonden. Laurel ziet er anders uit dan andere kinderen, al heeft ze dit zelf nog niet echt door. Ze is onwijs knap, en op school ziet ook David dit. Al snel worden Laurel en David hele goede vrienden en helpt David haar met haar biologie huiswerk. Dit komt goed van pas, aangezien Laurel op een gegeven moment rare ‘bloemen' op haar rug krijgt die ze voor iedereen moet verbergen. Alleen David durft ze te vertellen wat er is. Die helpt haar bij het onderzoeken van haar vleugels.
Laurel gaat terug naar haar oude huis om tot rust te komen, het landgoed daar vond ze altijd heerlijk. Daar ontmoet ze Tamani, die haar toch wel iets heel raars vertelt. En wat ziet Tamani er raar uit! Hij is groen! En dan heb je nog meneer Barns, die het landgoed en huis wilt kopen van de ouders van Laurel, wat is er toch met hem aan de hand? Laurel vertrouwt hem niet, maar weet niet zo goed waarom.

Wings is het eerste deel van de Laurel serie, bestaande uit 4 delen. De combinatie young-adult fantasy met elfjes had ik nog niet eerder gelezen en het leek me wel leuk voor de verandering. De achterflap maakte me in ieder geval heel nieuwsgierig, al kreeg ik bij het woord ‘elfje' wel een wat kinderlijk gevoel. Dit gevoel bleef ik houden tot ik halverwege het boek was. Het begint heel rustig en lievig, een boek zeker geschikt vanaf 12 jaar. Leuk voor tussendoor dacht ik, maar niet als je voor de echte young adult sensatie gaat. Toch werd het na ongeveer de helft van het boek opeens onwijs spannend wat mij enorm verraste. Tot het laatste hoofdstuk voel je de spanning en ik werd toch wel erg nieuwsgierig naar deel 2.

Now I'm always willing to give a new author a shot. Ecspecially one that is endorsed by Stephenie Meyer (yes I enjoyed the Twilight series and I'm not ashamed to admit it!) But what Meyer saw in this book I have no idea. It was by no means a ‘remarkable debut'. Was the concept interesting? Yes, the new look on faeries was great, but that was the only good part about this book. The dialogue was boring and childish. The characters are around the age of 15, they should have a more in depth use of vocabulary and not be so repetitive! Here's an example of Laurel's dialogue to her mother: “Mom,” Laurel said haltingly, “I wanted to talk to you about the land. It's been in your family for so long. And we lived there for my whole life.” To me she sounds like a whining child not a 15 year old. And please describe their language without the use of adjectives! The fact that there is a pathetic love triangle ate at my nerves as well. Oh let me swoon for a boy I barely know! But wait I'm kissing someone else and I feel like I'm betraying the other! Give me a break. Horrible book, bad writing and see through characters.

I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed this little book! It is a quick read that sucked me in from the start. The characters are well written and the story quite unique! I am looking forward to reading the other titles in the series.
