Cover:
If you've been following my blog for some time now, you'd know that I love the Mira Ink covers. They're gorgeous, especially the Soul Screamers' covers :). This cover is no exception ^_^.
Storyline:
This review is really hard to write. It is not easy to review a book you're in love with and just can't find anything wrong with it. I'm so sad this series had to come to an end but at the same time I'm glad it ended the way it did (although there are one or two things I would've changed...).
Summary:
Disclaimer: This review has spoilers of previous books in the series, so if you didn't read the previous books, read this review at your own risk.
The book starts with the funeral of Emma, who died at the end of Before I Wake and her soul is now in Lydia's body. Things aren't going well with her and Kaylee is freaking out. After all what Avari has put all of them through, Kaylee, Tod, Nash, Sabine, Emma, Luca and even Sophie decide that it's about time to put an end to all of this and to stop the hellions from killing anymore people.
While executing their plan, Avari, being always a step ahead of them, traps three family members of Kaylee's and manipulates her, trying to get her soul. Things get messier and old secrets surface (don't worry, they don't cause any harm, if anything, they strengthen a relationship.). Also, there's a new demon in town, and I really like him. He's not nice nor friendly, if anything, he wants Kaylee dead as much as Avari does, but he's got other priorities. Finally, when everything seems to be working against the plan, Kaylee makes a deadly choice; hearts brake, tears will be shed and you, the readers will be devastated. Then we are four years later, what happened the past four? And what's going on now after four years? This you'll have to figure out yourselves. You won't be disappointed ;).
What I loved:
- Rachel's writing style doesn't cease to amaze me. I rarely say this about books I read, but once I started reading I couldn't stop. Even after I take a little break, I comeback to the book knowing I'll just get right where I left off and that I'll be engulfed in the book again.
- The suspense, one of the main aspects in these books, along with mystery and fighting scenes, is awesome. You have no idea what is going on. Things are planned really carefully and in a smart way that you just have no idea what happened or guess what's next.
- The romance, although I'm not a fan of romantic books, is just perfect and safe and sweet. Kaylee and Tod are perfect. Tod is more perfect in some ways.
- The friendships, also an important aspect in the series and mostly everything in these books depends on them, got a lot better in this book (Ahem, Sophie & Sabine... are somehow more friendlier, but their character's traits don't change a bit).
- Hellions, what dragged into the series in the first place, are always nice to have around, because you know you'll have plenty of fight, gory, merciless and deadly scenes.
- Finally, the ending, I can't tell you how much I needed it after all what happened in the book, especially in the couple chapters before it. The ending is perfect for the series to end with it and it's fair to everyone.
What I disliked:
I can't lie about it because I just love the book and the series, but I wish the ending wasn't as harsh as it is. The way the story ended wasn't exactly the perfect ending for Kaylee, while it was in a way, it wasn't in another.
Characters:
Well, the characters and their traits haven't changed a bit from before and telling you any more would spoil the book for you, I just have to say that I was (still am) proud of Kaylee and of whom she's become. It has been a very long and stressful journey for her and she came through, finally.
I still really like and adore the whole gang, and I must really applaud Tod and give him credit for living through this hell (literally!!!).
Favorite quotes:
I used to hate the fact that my world is built on half-truths, held together with white lies. My life itself is an illusion requiring constant effort to maintain. I lie better than almost anyone I've ever met. But if I know the truth about anything, it's this: when people say the devil is in the details, they have no idea how right they are.... — Chapter One.
“I always knew this day would come, little bean sidhe. I knew that someday you would scream just for me. So open your pretty little mouth, and let's have a taste of forever.”
His hand clenched around my arm, and pain like a thousand needles shot through every muscle in my body, driving away all thought and all sight. My mouth dropped open, and a scream of agony ripped free from my throat, shredding the soft tissues as it poured out of me. — Chapter Twenty-two.
I looked into his eyes and got lost in them. “That could take a long time.”
He started swaying, and I swayed with him, and it didn't matter that we didn't have music, or friends, or punch, or a gym decorated with lights and crepe paper. We had the only two things we needed for our private prom—each other. And pretty clothes.
“I don't care if it takes forever, Kaylee,” he said, and warmth trailed down my spine to settle in a dozen pleasant places. “The universe owes us forever. And our eternity starts now.” — Chapter Twenty-four.
Conclusion:
Wow! I've prepared this review over a year ago, and due to some reasons and school and stuff I couldn't publish it earlier. However, I finished it today and while I'm writing this conclusion right now, I can remember every single detail of the whole series, from beginning to end.
This is my all time favorite series along with The Hollow by Jessica Verday. If you came this far, to the final sequel, you have to go through with it, you won't regret it at all! I should warn you, you'll need a big box of tissues... ;).
Thank you Rachel for an awesome ending to an awesome series, I can't wait to get started with her new YA book, The Stars Never Rise!
Happy Reading everyone!
